We are delighted to introduce you to one of our new artists – Semi Lubisi.

Semi is a self taught artist from Ivory Park, Tembisa.

His love for art developed at a young age when he would draw cartoon characters in his school books.

In 2019, he left his position working at a bank to pursue art as a career. He uses his art as a way to communicate emotions of hope and happiness and draws inspiration from everyday experiences of ordinary South Africans, specifically township communities. He uses charcoal, water colours and acrylics on paper to relate stories and experiences of everyday township life.

His style involves firm charcoal strokes with soft shades combined with bright colours that brings a sense of vibrance and vividness to his works, reflecting the atmosphere of the township.

His piece titled “we shall prevail” a painting of three kids with masks made it to the Covid Pandemic awareness Art hostel on-line by the X Gallery in New York City joined by Covid inspired artworks from around the world.

In July 2020 Semi had a solo exhibition titled “We the children“ – an expressive and colourful body of drawings and paintings, revealing the playful, innocent and vulnerable nature of children and at the same time reminding us that children should be at the core of any society’s priorities – being the future leaders of tomorrow.

Semi has been taking part in group exhibitions since 2000 and in 2020 held his first solo online exhibition “we the children” with the Constitution Hill Art Gallery.

In 2020 he also featured on a permanent online World Pandemic Awareness Art Exhibition with the X Gallery in NYC.

He has worked with and is working with galleries in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Germany and New York.
