According to an article by Martha Stewart, there are several ways that you can create the look of natural light in your home.
It can be quite a challenge to decorate rooms with very little natural light. Colours look brighter and can jar the eye in the shadows and can make rooms feel uninviting, which is not great for a room where you spend a lot of time in.
Whereas dark paint colours are very effective and trendy, they will make a dark room look more drab. So choose a lighter colour for the walls that can reflect light around the space. Shades of beige, white, pale grey and fine examples of colours that should be considered for a dark room.

As well as using light painting colours, you can also create an uninterrupted wall space by adding wallpaper. This is a great idea for a bathroom where natural light is typically minimal.
Warm accent lighting can brighten a dark room – adding lamps for reading or desk lamps can add a cozy feel and helps to create a look of intimacy and warns the space and mood instantly.
Don’t reduce the small amount of light in your room by blocking it with thick curtains. Add lightweight curtains which will allow you to let the light in.

When choosing your furniture materials select lighter colours where you can. Light upholstery or natural wood finishes will maintain a feeling of light. Bulky or dark-coloured pieces that can make the space look heavier.

Boost the lighting in the room by installing dimmer switches for overhead lighting, which will enable you to control the light levels. The designers say that “Light is directly related to mood, especially during the winter months. Dimming the light softens the room and creates a sense of warmth.”
Mirrors can bounce light—from lamps, overhead lighting, candles to brighten darker areas. Place mirrors to reflect natural light throughout the room, to add depth and luminosity. This can make it appear as though you have double the amount of light in your space.
Besides mirrors, there are plenty of other types of reflective surfaces such as glass, acrylic, and glossy finishes. Consider using a glass coffee table, acrylic chairs, or glossy cabinets to further elevate the overall brightness and appeal of the room.
If you have wooden floors adding a bright area rug can make a real difference in the tone of the space. “Sometimes wooden floors can darken a room, so adding a rug in a lighter colour tone can soften and brighten a room.

Your accents are just as important as some of the main factors of your room, like paint and furniture colours. Go lighter with accent pillows and throws—in both colour and material. “Sometimes just adding some new light-coloured pillows and throw blankets will be enough to brighten a dark sofa or chair. Linens and cottons are great for adding to the feel of being light and bright.
