New artist: Dario Manjate
19 November, 2023

Dario was born in 1972 in Mozambique, and from a young age, he was drawn to painting and drawing. In 1993, he moved to Alexandra Township where he fully embraced his passion for art and decided to pursue a career as a professional artist.  He uses recycled magazines in his work, as the glossy pages enhance the message he wants to convey.

Dario met and worked with Steve Mavusu, an art teacher at Thusong Youth Centre during the early days of his career. Under his guidance Dario developed his artistic skills in a number of different mediums, specifically the medium he is known for today – collage.

In 1998 he enrolled at Artists Proof Studio to further his artistic skills by studying the techiques of printmaking such as Drypoint, Line cut, and silkscreen, to name but a few.

Dario has participated in group exhibitions since 2015 in South Africa and Atlanta, Georgia USA). He is currently having an exhibition in The Netherlands.

Unlike most collage artists, Dario does not tear his paper and build an image out of colour tones, he cuts out every piece. He discovered that building his images out of cut-out objects created a beautiful harmony between his medium and his concept.

From afar his portraits look beautiful, however, upon closer inspection the volume of material items begins to overwhelm. It can take up to three months for Dario to complete one of the bigger artworks.

After 18 years in the IT industry, Doreen decided to surround herself on a daily basis by photography that she loves which led to the establishment of The Cow Artworks in 2004. In March 2006 she opened the gallery in Parkhurst and has thrived in this beautiful space. Her passion for travel affords her the opportunity to take photographs, particularly candid shots of street scenes, graffiti and architecture.
