Mr Brainwash

For more than a decade, Thierry Guetta, under his artist name, Mr. Brainwash, has been pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.

He has shaken up the art world with his innovative style. He uses elements of pop art and raw compositions from his street art beginnings to create larger than life installations and collaborations. Formerly a videographer and owner of a vintage clothing store, he was encouraged by Banksy to pursue a career in art. He launched his career after being featured in the documentary “Exit through the Gift Shop.”

He is known for using prints of celebrities like Madonna, Kate Moss and Marilyn Monroe and borrows from Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Banksy. He subtly alters the picture or its context, mischievously undermining the tone of the source material.

Born in 1966 in Garges-lés- Gonesse, France, he moved to Los Angeles when he was 15. His interest in street art was spurred by a visit to France in 1999, where he learned that his cousin was the famed graffiti artist “Space Invader.” In 2013 he was included in the exhibition “Art Wars” at Saatchi Gallery in London.

His work hinges on the idea that anything is possible in his practice. “Art has no walls. Anybody can be an artist”, he says. “Art has no rules. There’s no manual.”

He has collaborated with the world’s most iconic brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Coachella and Coca-Cola. In 2014  he was commissioned by Coca-Cola to create a billboard celebrating the 100th anniversary of the company in Time Square, New York.

We’ve compiled a short video below with a few more of his artwork… enjoy!
