Lady AIKO
7 March, 2021

I first came across the work of the graffiti artist, Lady Aiko in New York at The Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking district where she did the stairwell in 2010.

Aiko Nakagawa was born and raised in Tokyo and moved to New York in the mid-90’s and established herself as Lady AIKO in 2006. She has worked with Banksy and collaborated with Louis Vuitton, Hello Kitty and Warner Bros. She is based in Brooklyn, New York and is one of the most important female artists known for her ability to combine western art movements and eastern technical artistic skills.

These images in the collage are all from the stairwell at The Standard Hotel. You will notice the woman’s face in the corner of the top image is her trademark and incorporated in most of her works. All nine images in this collage are from the stairwell.

In 2013 she spent 3 weeks in Kliptown, Soweto and worked on street art project with local artists. The two images above adorned the walls in downtown Johannesburg.

After 18 years in the IT industry, Doreen decided to surround herself on a daily basis by photography that she loves which led to the establishment of The Cow Artworks in 2004. In March 2006 she opened the gallery in Parkhurst and has thrived in this beautiful space. Her passion for travel affords her the opportunity to take photographs, particularly candid shots of street scenes, graffiti and architecture.
