How to mix art on a wall

A gallery wall is a great way to display all of the special artworks you have collected. What can be a challenge, is how to mix them on the walls so they look right. Many colours, patterns and style can become a little overwhelming.

The starting point for getting your wall styled correctly is that every wall should tell a story or evoke a mood. You need to consider the feeling you want – be it moody, calm, graphic or playful. This is a good place to start because it will help you to develop the right colour palette and then put the right pieces together.

The above picture shows you a moody, cool and a little calming story. There is both floral photography and watercolour placed together and they work because they make you feel the same.

The second thing to consider is to mix different moods. You can combine different styles and colours together.

You can also mix frame styles – the frames you use for your art can make or break the wall. We can suggest using frames of a similar time period – contemporary frames together or more vintage together. It is good to mix art that has no mountboards with some that have different size mountboards.

When it comes to the size of art, you should have a variety of large and smaller pieces but don’t have the large ones on one side and the smaller sizes on another side. If you lay out the pieces on the floor before you hang them, you should be able to see how to place them.
