Every year in August, South Africa celebrates women’s month. This gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to the generations of women whose struggles laid the foundations for the progress made in empowering women and achieving gender equality.
65 years ago, in 1956 more than 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings on the 9th of August to protest the pass laws. We now celebrate the strength and resilience of women and their contribution to society and our country.
Our very own advocate Thuli Madonsela is named one of the 100 most influential people in the world, by Time magazine in 2014. Here is one of her quotes:
“Through life, I have learned that the most important critic whose judgement of my actions matters, is my conscience.”

“It has been women who have breathed gentleness and care into the hard progress of humankind.”
HRH Queen Elizabeth II

“There are three things I was born with in this world, and there are three things I will have until the day I die – hope, determination, and song.”
Miriam Makeba
